An excess flow valve is a safety device designed to automatically shut off or limit the flow of gas when the flow rate exceeds a set limit. This usually happens if there's a break or leak in the downstream piping. The valve helps prevent accidents, fires, or equipment damage by stopping uncontrolled flow.
